Message from the Principal, Mrs. Kelly Maloney

Dear CET Families,

Happy Fall!  Everyone seems to have adjusted to being back to school full-time; routines are in place, the food service program is up and running, and the Lost and Found is full!  I hope that you were able to attend the Back to School Nights and meet your child’s teacher(s). It is hard to believe that Parent-Teacher conferences will be taking place in a few weeks!  A K12 alert will be sent out tonight at 7:00 pm informing you of how to sign up for your conference.

Teachers have been busy assessing students using a variety of tools. All students have taken the STAR assessment (Early Literacy, Reading and/or Mathematics), a standardized computer-adaptive assessment, that provides information about student growth and  achievement. Each assessment provides estimates of students’ skills and comparisons of students’ abilities to national norms. These scores present a snapshot of achievement at a specific point in time, and gives only one picture of how a student is doing in school. All students take this assessment a minimum of three times during the school year. Additionally, teachers have begun to assess students in reading to determine their “just right” level, or independent reading level. Decoding, fluency, and comprehension skills are assessed using the Scholastic Next Step  Reading assessment. You can view your child’s STAR results on the eSchool Parent Portal. As a reminder, the eSchool Parent Portal is where you will also find your child’s report card and the results of the New York State grade 3 and 4 assessments.

Our before school math programs will be starting this month. As I mentioned at Back to School Nights, we offer before math programs for students in grades 2-4.  These programs begin at 7:30 am and are designed for children who enjoy math and like a challenge!

We have a new link on our CET homepage called “Digital Link/Tools”; it can be found under “Quick Links”. Students can go directly to this link to access websites and on-line resources such as IXL, RAZ-Kids, and Type to Learn. Your child will need to know their login and password.

Our third and fourth graders worked with local artist, Joe Mullins, this week on leaf and fish printing. They will be coming home with these beautiful prints. Thank you to our PTA for paying for this special program. Third and fourth graders also began a new Physical Education unit-tennis! I had the opportunity to hit a few balls with some of them today!

Don’t forget to follow us on Twitter. #CETelementary.

I hope that you are able to enjoy the warm weather this weekend! Be sure to get outside!

Warmly,

Kelly

October Activities

CET has a very busy month ahead!  First of all, if you have seen your children come home with their paper “sneakers” please encourage your child to color their sneaker and bring it back to Ms. Leslie with their $1.00 donation to the Harry Chapin Run Against Hunger.  The actual run will take place on Sunday, October 21 st with the1 Mile  Fun Run beginning at 11:30 am near Veterans Corners.   The coordinators of the run will provide a pizza party to the class that has the greatest participation in the Fun Run.  Students have been practicing for the run during their PE classes.  The run provides families with a great opportunity to get out and participate in a fun activity for a great cause.

On Wednesday, October 10 th all CET students will attend an assembly on fire safety and fire prevention.  Members of the Croton Fire Department will share information about fire safety and stress the importance of having two possible evacuation routes in the event of a fire.  Students will have the opportunity to see one of the firefighters in full gear as well as see and hear their oxygen tank.  The assembly will conclude with the students going outside to see and ask questions about the Engine Truck.  All of the tools and equipment on the truck will be on display for the students to see.  There will be plenty more to see and do at the Fire Fair on Sunday, October 14 th from 1-5 at the Harmon Fire House.

Wednesday, October 24 th will be our annual district-wide Unity Day.  Students will participate in a number of activities to promote unity and friendship here at CET.  We encourage all students to wear orange to show their unity and support for bully prevention.

Finally, on Tuesday, October 30 th our students will learn about Halloween Safety with a visit from the Croton Police Department.  Our Halloween Parade will take place on Wednesday, October 31 st at 1:00 pm at Spencer Field.  We hope to see you there!

We REACH for Character at C.E.T.!

As many of you know, the REACH acronym stands for Respect, Effort, Acceptance, Cooperation and Honesty.  These are character strengths that we expect everyone at C.E.T. to show. At the beginning of every year we talk to students about these character traits and review what each one might look like in various places around the school including the classroom, hallways, bathrooms, lunchroom, playground and on the bus.  This year we are trying something new to emphasize and develop these strengths in our students.

On September 28, we met as an entire school in the multi-purpose room and talked about Respect.  This was the first of seven assemblies that are planned throughout the year. We defined respect as “Thinking and acting in a positive way about yourself or others as well as thinking and acting in a way that shows others you care about their feelings and well being.”  We focused on respecting yourself, respecting others and respecting the school. Student volunteers gave examples of each.

As part of our school counseling program and social emotional learning curriculum, I will be visiting each classroom over the next few weeks to do a lesson with students about being respectful to yourself.  In addition, teachers and staff will be reinforcing the character strength of respect by incorporating it into classroom discussions and lessons, as well as by providing positive reinforcement and giving out “Caught being Good” stickers at lunch/recess and in the hallways when students exhibit respectful behavior.

What can you do at home to reinforce being respectful?  Here are a few resources that may help:

https://educateempowerkids.org/self-respect

https://www.empoweringparents.com/article/do-your-kids-respect-you-9-ways-to-change-their-attitude/

Upcoming assemblies and lessons will address the character traits of Empathy, Acceptance, Perseverance, Cooperation, Responsibility and Reflection.

Have a great weekend!

Hand-Washing

Hand-washing is one of the best (and most over-looked) ways of helping to prevent the spread of germs.  Talk to your child about the importance of washing their hands.  Explain to them how if their hands are dirty, or have “sick germs” on them, they might accidentally end up putting those “sick germs” in their bodies when they eat, or rub their eyes, or scratch their nose

Remind your child to wash their hands when:

  • They are visibly dirty
  • Before eating, touching, or preparing foods
  • After using the bathroom
  • After coughing or blowing their nose
  • After (and before!) visiting a sick friend or family member
  • After playing outside

Keep in mind however, that following these guidelines might not always be possible.  For example, if your child is coughing or blowing their nose during a lesson, it would be disruptive to your child and the rest of the class for him/her to go wash hands after every time they wipe their nose.  In instances such as these, it would be better to have your child wash their hands after or in between lessons.

Practice proper handwashing techniques with your child at home:

  • Turn on the water (warm or cold; hot is not necessary!)
  • Get some soap (any kind)
  • Scrub hands, away from the running water, for 20 seconds (about as long as it takes to sing “Happy Birthday” twice).  Be sure to wash all surfaces of the hands including wrists, in between fingers, and around and under fingernails.
  • Rinse well with water
  • Dry hands with paper towel
  • Turn off the water faucets with the used paper towel
