Message from the Principal, Mrs. Kelly Maloney

Dear CET Families,

Did you know that June 1st is National Donut Day? Or is it doughnut? More importantly, it is the first day of June and there are only three weeks of school left!  So much to do, so little time!

Thanks to Ms. Peters and ALL of the families that participated in our first “Around the World with CET: Cultural Night” last Friday night!  In my opinion, it was the BEST school event ever!  We had a wonderful turnout-hundreds of people came! The families that showcased their cultural backgrounds outdid themselves! The time and energy spent preparing for this event was evident in the displays, and activities planned.  I can only imagine how long it took to prepare some of the spectacular food dishes! The evening ended with an amazing fashion show! The feedback from those who attended our Cultural Night was great-the one big “complaint” was that more time was needed to visit all of the booths.  We plan to host the 2nd Annual “Around the World with CET: Cultural Night ” next year! Check out the pictures from this event on our school webpage or at #CETelementary.

Third graders enjoyed the Earth Portable classroom this week. This inflatable version of the Earth allowed students to gain a deeper understanding of geography.  An educator from BOCES Madden Farm came and spoke to each third grade class about geography while giving them a chance to go “inside the Earth”. Students in Mrs. Sullivan’s class were so excited about what they learned that they wrote me letters sharing their new knowledge!  Some fun facts they learned: Antarctica is the world’s largest desert; Iceland is green and Greenland is icy; some islands are sinking; and “in theory, there are only 6 continents because Europe and Asia is one land mass”. The Earth Portable classroom connected nicely to third grade Social Studies as well as to the grade level “Around the World with CET” performances.

Our fourth grade students took part one of the NYS Science test this week. This hands-on component required students to complete three tasks independently using various scientific tools, making observations, and synthesizing their observations. On Monday, they will take the written component of this test. The NYS Science test is a cumulative test meaning that is assessing science content and skills K-4.

As we get ready for summer, I encourage you to speak with your children about water safety, bike safety, and “stranger danger”. Members of the Croton Police Department will be speaking with all 3rd and 4th grade students about bike safety later this month. Additionally, internet safety and appropriate Google searches may be conversations to have with older students. Recently, we have had a few students google inappropriate topics.

I hope to see many of you later today for the two mile walk to raise money for CharityWater.  The walk will start at 4:00 pm in the back of CET near the soccer field. A $5 donation (or more) can be made to CharityWater.org. CharityWater.org provides clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations. Parents must accompany their child(ren) . Thank you to Ms. Strattner’s fourth grade class for organizing this event!

Warmly,

Kelly

News from the Assistant Principal, Mrs. Kerri Bianchi

We are approaching the end of the school year.  The weather is improving and our children continue to grow both academically and physically.  We are starting to notice that for a number of our growing children that they are still hungry even after eating their lunches.  Please consider that with increased outdoor activity that your child may also have an increase in their appetite. You may need to pack a bigger lunch or additional snacks to get your child  through the day. We have also noticed that students are throwing away food because the say that they do not like what was packed in their lunchboxes. We encourage you to have a conversation with your child about what they would like to eat for lunch.  Having this conversation and packing a nutritious lunch that you are both happy with will not only help to make sure students are eating an adequate amount of food during lunch but it will also help support our “Stop Food Waste” initiative. Feeding children is a challenge but we know that well nourished and well fed students perform better in school.  We ask you to please keep this in mind as you prepare lunches for the remainder of the school year.

Summer’s Almost Here!

While many kids (and parents) want to take the summer off from academics, there are many ways to keep children learning and “exercise their brain” throughout July and August.  Some kids will go to camp and some won’t. Either way, there is plenty of time for you and your child(ren) to have fun and learn together. Need ideas? Here are some tips and websites to explore.

  • LIMIT SCREEN TIME! This includes any type of screen: phone, iPod, iPad, Tablet, TV, etc.. Set a time limit for each day and “curfew” each night.  Make sure there are breaks in between where kids are up and moving. I know this is easier said than done, but make the extra effort. Your child’s brain and body will benefit!

  • READ!  A combination of reading with your child, to your child and having your child read independently is best.  20 minutes a day - at least! Why? See below. Check your child’s teacher’s website for a suggested reading list.

  • Rainy Day? Go to the MOVIES!   Here’s a few suggested ones to see with kids of various ages:

10 Summer Movies

I’d like to extend a special Thank You to everyone in the Croton community who welcomed me to CET this year.  I truly love it here and can’t wait to hear about all the summer adventures in September!

Have an Amazing Summer!

Robin
