CET Newsletter May 18, 2018

https://www.chufsd.org/Domain/10

Message from the Principal, Mrs. Kelly Maloney

Dear CET Families,

I hope that you had the chance to check out the District-wide Art Show this week.  It is impressive to see the artistic talent across all three schools. As I mentioned in my last newsletter, every CET student had a piece of artwork that they selected to be displayed at the Art Show. All artwork will be coming home in the next few weeks.

Our fourth graders had an orientation visit to PVC this week. They had the chance to tour the building, visit fifth grade classrooms, learn about school expectations and responsibilities, and participate in a Q & A.  They returned excited about PVC. The goal of this visit is to help ease their transition to PVC. Parents had their own orientation meeting earlier this month.

Our third grade classes went on the Walkway Over the Hudson this week.  This steel cantilever bridge crosses the Hudson River connecting Poughkeepsie, NY and Highland, NY.  Walkway ambassadors led groups of students and parent chaperones across the bridge while providing historical information related to the area as well as information about the Hudson River. This field trip supports our school-wide study of the Hudson River as well as supports the study of New York history.  If you haven’t visited the Walkway Over the Hudson, you might want to consider checking it out.

We will be hosting our first ever “Around the World with CET: Cultural Night” tonight! We have over 20 families that will be setting up booths to highlight a particular country.  Each booth will showcase activities, crafts, dancing, and/or foods from that country. CET students should bring their passports that were sent home this week (not their real passport!). Passports will be stamped at each country visited.  The evening will end with a fashion show! Due to the rainy weather we have had, this event will be indoors.

Hope to see you tonight!

Adios! Au revoir! Auf Wiedersehen!

Kelly

News from the Assistant Principal, Mrs. Kerri Bianchi

Attention 4 th Grade families, starting May 30 th our 4 th graders will participate in the New York State Science test.  The 4 th grade science test is made up of two parts.  The students will take a performance test where they are asked to manipulate science tools such as balances, rulers, circuits and measuring cups.  On Monday, June 4 th they will complete the written portion of the test that consists of both multiple choice and extended response questions.  The 4 th grade Science test is a culmination of skills and concepts learned from kindergarten through 4 th grade.  Typically our students enjoy taking the 4 th grade Science test and they perform very well.  If you would like to see sample questions you can visit www.nysed.gov .  Scroll down and click on assessments then Grade 4 and 8 Science.

A Child Friendly Food Environment

Once a month, CET offers parent training support covering various methods to address behavioral issues within the home. Some topics covered this year include: differentiating between tangible and intangible reinforcers, identifying a schedule of reinforcement, planned ignoring, proactive reinforcement- role play, modeling, and praise of desired behaviors.

At a recent parent training session, a parent of a CET student shared her expertise as a nutritionist. She made a handout for parents promoting a healthy food environment for children. Below are some ideas shared on this handout:

Mealtime Tips

  • Offer regular meal and snack times and stick with those general times.
  • Make food safety, including washing hands, a part of every eating occasion.
  • Allow your child to decide whether or not to eat and how much they would like to eat.
  • Do not call foods “good” or “bad” - instead teach your children to know which foods are healthy by choosing them yourself.
  • If a child does not want to eat at mealtime ask them to keep you company at the table.

If you would like more information about creating a healthy food environment for your household, please find a copy of this handout in the main lobby of CET.

Message from Christine Martins, School Nurse

Sunscreen

Hello, Parents!

Sunny spring weather is finally upon us!  Between recess and “work breaks”, our kids are spending a lot of time outside.  Much of that time is during the peak sun hours, those hours being between 10am and 2pm.  Please help protect their skin from potentially harmful sun exposure by applying, or helping them apply, sunscreen every morning before coming to school.

If you would like your child to reapply sunscreen during the day, or before an after school program such as Childrenspace, please fill out section 2 of this form and have your child return it to me:

 https://cetschoolnurse.weebly.com/uploads/4/3/7/2/43725439/x_medication_form_-_md_orders_fillable_revised_9-10-2015.pdf

This form can also be found on the school nurse webpage.

Sunscreen should be clearly labeled with your child’s name in permanent black marker.

As always, the health and safety of your child is my top priority.  If you have any questions or concerns regarding this, please don’t hesitate to call or email me.

To read up on sun safety, check out this article on the Academy of Pediatrics’ HealthyChildren.org:

Thank You and Happy Spring!

AROUND THE WORLD WITH CET:

CULTURAL NIGHT!

FRIDAY NIGHT, May 18th is our first Cultural Night at CET from 6:30-8:00PM.

Parents have volunteered to create booths featuring 24 countries!!.  Each booth will consist of visuals of the country, an activity/craft, dance, and food tastings.  Passports have been distributed to all CET students and they should bring their passport to the event. Each country will have a spot to stamp their passports.  If your child cannot come this year, put it in a safe place for next year when we travel the world again.

Families will visit booths from 6:30-7:30PM, then we will have a fashion show from 7:30-8:00PM.  We will set up on the CET field but if it rains we will have it inside the school.

We invite you to bring the whole family and travel the world with us.

CET PTA

Just over a month left of the school year, but the PTA is not slowing down -- plenty of activities to support and be part of in the coming weeks, Field Day, class picnics, recently approved purchases for physical education and music (voted on by members at this week's meeting), and conclusion of the Gift Basket Raffle. You can still buy raffle tickets and view the baskets at the Around the World Cultural Night (May 18) or just prior to the drawing on  May 22 at 7pm.

While we don't want to rush ahead, we're also starting to line things up for the Fall. Thanks to an outpouring of creative ideas, increased involvement and constructive feedback from parents, PTA activities and programs will be in great shape for the coming year. We do still have roles to fill (of all shapes and sizes), so please reach out and let us know how your skill set, interests and schedule best fit with an opportunity to get more involved in your child's education. Email us at cetpta@gmail.com.

When it comes to looking ahead to a new school year, we know many families are wondering which class their child will be in.  Come hear about the process and ask questions at the next Principal's Coffee, featuring two sessions.  May 30, 2018 (special evening time of  7 pm) or  June 1, 2018 ( 9:30 am). A video recording of the meeting will also be on the school's website for anyone who can't make it.

But first, Summer - send your campers off in a manner that ensures all their gear will come back. Support the PTA by purchasing customized labels from Oliver's Labels - no added cost to you, all discounts and coupons still apply, and the PTA earns a share of every purchase made. Click here to shop:  (www.oliverslabels.com/cetpta )

FIELD DAY - MAY 24, 2018

Field Day will be held this  Thursday May 24th with a rain date of  May 25th. Please remember to have your child wear sunscreen as they will be outside all day as well as label any water bottles they bring. We will have water provided throughout the day with a watermelon break in the morning and ice pop break at the end of the day. We'd like to take this time to thank the PTA for their constant help and support in organizing field day t-shirts, as well as our treats for the day! Get ready for a day filled with FUN!
