Message from the Principal, Mrs. Kelly Maloney

Dear CET Families,

The safety and security of our students, your children, are our top priority, and we need your help.  I am concerned about the morning drop off. This week I witnessed an excessive number of parents dropping their children off at school. The line of cars entering the back of CET was backed up almost to Cleveland Drive! I witnessed several parents stop their car in the line of traffic, let their child out, and then pull a U-turn so they would not have to wait in line.  This behavior is dangerous!  Someone is going to get hit!   I beg you to please put your child on the school bus!  Our back parking lot and drop off area were not meant to handle this type of traffic.  Staff members are having a difficult time parking due to the amount of cars lined up  and cannot walk safely through the parking lot to enter the building. IF you do need to drive your child to school, drop off is in the rear of the school between 7:50-8:10 a.m.  Our school day starts at 8:15 a.m.  It has also come to my attention that some parents are dropping their child off before 7:50 a.m.  This is also a dangerous situation. There is no one here to supervise your child. Mrs. Turrisi, our aide, who greets students at the back doors, is not there to babysit.  If your child attends a before school program such as chorus, band, or a morning math program, please do not drop your child off before the start time of that program. The music programs begin at 7:40 a.m. and the math programs start at 7:30 a.m. Also, remember our school day begins at 8:15 a.m . We have a number of students who continue to arrive late.  Students who arrive late are missing opportunities to socialize, play, and complete morning tasks.

Continuing with the theme of safety, Croton police officers, Officer Leonard, Officer Ward,  and Detective Smith, visited CET today to talk students about Halloween safety. They reminded students to remain with an adult at all times, to look both ways before crossing a street, and to only trick or treat at homes that have a light on outside. Each student was given a trick or treat bag, a word search puzzle, and bookmark. Ask your child what they recall from the Halloween Safety visit. Thank you to the Croton Police Department!

Weather permitting, we do plan on holding our Halloween parade. A K12 was sent home today with the specifics, and we have included it again at the end of this newsletter.

Enjoy the weekend!

Warmly,

Kelly

News from the Assistant Principal, Mrs. Kerri Bianchi

Our 4 th Annual Unity Day (which is actually Unity Week) was a huge success at CET.  We began the week with daily Friendship announcements by our 4 th graders and by beginning to construct our Unity Chain around the school.  All students learned a Unity Song and dance in music class.  CET was a sea of orange on Wednesday with students wishing staff and other students “Happy Unity Day”.  We kicked off Unity Day at CET with a school-wide assembly where we emphasized our four Olweus bullying prevention rules, sang our CET song,  learning how to say “We are all friends” in Spanish and danced our unity dance!  During lunch and recess, we allowed students to “mix it up” and encouraged them to play with and sit with new friends.  We had such a positive response from both students and staff about our Unity Day success.  The 4 th grade made a special contribution to Unity Day by creating posters explaining what friendship means to them and displaying them in the 4 th grade wing.  Other classes are creating cartoons on Chrome books that address bullying prevention and how to be an upstander.  Please ask your children about this important event.  It is our goal to continue the theme of “CET-United in Friendship” through the year!

Message from Robin Woolley, School Counselor

Fourth Grade Social Emotional Curriculum

As part of the elementary school counseling program, I will be providing social emotional lessons to all grade levels throughout the year.  Over the last few weeks, I have been going into the fourth grade classrooms and reading a series of books by Erin Frankel that talk about bullying from different perspectives.  The books, Weird!, Dare! and Tough! promote the character strengths of confidence, courage, kindness and empathy.  The students have been enjoying the books and are making wonderful connections between the characters/themes in these books and books they read in 3rd grade, as well as a book that the entire 4th grade is currently reading in class.  We will be concluding our 5 lesson unit over the next two weeks with a special project that will be displayed in the halls and will eventually make its way home.

Students are being challenged to look at the way they interact with their classmates, friends, and other students that they may not know so well and to recognize their role in social interactions.  It is my hope that they will be more reflective of their own actions and to know that there are people who care and who will help them if they or someone they know are ever in a bullying situation.  It is also my hope that they will be respectful and accepting of others who are looking to change past behaviors and make better choices.

Below is a link with some resources on bullying and cyberbullying.  If you have any questions or feedback about the lessons, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me.

Have a wonderful week!

Ghosts and Goblins and Ghouls, Oh My!

Jack-o-lanterns, falling leaves, costumes and CANDYCANDYCANDY!!!  Halloween time is one of the most anticipated times of year for practically every child.  Who can blame them?  Dressing up in wild costumes.  Decorating the house and yard.  Carving pumpkins.  Visiting The Blaze!  Halloween parties.  And trick-or-treating for... candy!  Seeing your child’s face light up with delight (or fright!) is an equally amazing treat for us parents.  Not to mention dipping into their trick-or-treating bags when they’re not looking…

However, it’s important to keep in mind that Halloween time is not all innocent fun.  There are many potential risks and hazards during trick-or-treating…  As parents, we need to instruct our children on Halloween Safety:

  • With so many children on the road, it is easy to lose sight of your child amidst other costumed children.  Remind your child to always stay in your sights.
  • Explain to your child that there will be motorists on the road, and to take care when crossing streets.  Have him/her wear a reflective strip on their costume or to carry a flashlight/glowstick.
  • Even though adults and houses are dressed and decorated in the Halloween spirit, they are still strangers!  And should be treated as such!  Remind your child not to go into anybody’s house or car, and not to eat any candy until inspected by you.
  • Once you have approved of the candy, ensure your child (or you!) doesn’t over indulge.  Nobody likes a tummy ache…  Or the sugar rush that goes along with the candy!

Parents, please check out these links for more tips on Halloween safety:

HALLOWEEN PARADE

The CET Halloween Parade is scheduled for Tuesday, October 31 at 1:00 pm. The parade is held on Spencer Field which is located next to the District Office.  All spectators should go directly to Spencer Field.  For the safety of our students, spectators will not be allowed on the track or field. Spectators can view the parade from the bleachers or they can stand outside the fence.  If you are planning on attending the parade, we suggest you arrive early as parking near the school is limited.  Please make sure that your vehicle does not obstruct traffic or emergency vehicle access.

The parade will be over by 2:00 pm and all students will return to their classrooms. Parents and other visitors are asked to remain at the track while the students walk the path back to the building.  Parents and visitors will not be allowed back into the building. Students will not be dismissed as "pick ups" until the regular dismissal time which is 2:30 pm. If you plan to pick up your child, a note should have been sent in already regarding a change in dismissal.

Children should bring their Halloween costume to school.  They will have time before the parade to put on their costumes. Please remember weapons and sharp objects are not allowed.  Masks that are bloody, scary, or obstruct clear vision are not permitted.

Halloween is an exciting day for children and we want to do everything possible to make this a special day while ensuring their safety. Please follow the guidelines that we have put in place.  We thank you in advance for your cooperation.

The class who brings in the most pajamas will win an extra recess period. If 300+ pajamas are collected, the entire school will get to wear their pajamas, including Ms. Maloney and Ms. Bianchi.
