Message from the Principal, Mrs. Kelly Maloney

Dear CET Families,

Can you believe that we only have three more weeks left to the school year?! The year has flown by!

Our Field Day last week was a huge success! Kudos to our PE teachers, Ms. Leslie and Mr. Duchin for putting together the activities for the day which included some old favorites like Tug of War and Capture the Flag as well as some new ones like Angry Birds and Gaga Ball. Thank you to our PTA for providing watermelon and ice pops! Life is Good!

Students most favorite Physical Education unit started this week-Gym City!  Our gym has been turned into a mini version of Croton on Hudson. The Croton Dam, Croton Diner, Croton Police Station, and Firehouse are all represented in Gym City.   Students take on the role of a community worker or a motor vehicle driver, and behave as such! Maneuvering various types of scooters, students “drive” around Croton.  For those speeding or involved in crashes, the police, ambulance workers, and tow truck drivers are there to help! Drivers who have been issued multiple tickets may need to see the judge. Participating in Gym City provides our students with the opportunity to engage in imaginative play. I will be tweeting pictures of Gym City. You can follow us at #CETElementary.  Ask your child about Gym City.

As a way to support our school-wide study of the Hudson River, all third grade classes went to the Walkway over the Hudson this week.  Escorted by docents, students learned about the history of the Hudson River which included transportation, trade, and animals that live in and along the river. I encourage you to learn about the Hudson River. Did you know that the Hudson River was considered America’s first superhighway? It was also the inspiration for the first American art movement and the birthplace of environmental activism. I recommend a great picture book called River of Dreams by Hudson Talbott.

I look forward to seeing you at our Spring Concert on Wednesday, June 7 and at CET’s Got Talent show on Thursday, June 8.

Enjoy the weekend!

Warmly,

Kelly

News from the Assistant Principal, Mrs. Kerri Bianchi

Once again, student report cards will be available on the parent portal.  You will have access to view the report cards after 12:00pm on Friday, June 23.  In addition to the student’s current report card in the portal, you will be able to view your child’s prior year’s report cards and STAR data.  You will see the student’s scaled score for their STAR Assessments (Kindergarten takes Early Literacy and grades 1-4 take STAR Reading and STAR Math).  The STAR report will show the student’s scores from September, January and June.  You may notice that your child’s score between January and June has a slight drop.  This can best be explained by the fact that the STAR Assessments are computer adapted.  The level of difficulty of the questions is based on the student’s success.  If a child scored well in January than the complexity and level of the questions would increase for the June administration.  We use STAR assessment data to assess student growth throughout the year.  When looking at your child’s STAR report it should represent growth from the September administration to the June administration.  Please remember that STAR is just one piece of data we use to determine a student’s progress and growth.  You may find that it does not always align with other data or teacher comments.

If you would like to request a hard copy of reports, please contact the Main Office at CET.  As always, if you have any questions regarding the parent portal or student reports, please contact Kelly Maloney or Kerri Bianchi.

News From Vilma Torres-Pagan, School Counselor

Internet Safety

In this ever-increasing world of technology, we are spending more of our time surfing the internet, glued to our smartphones, our computers, and/or tablets, potentially exposing us to information that we would otherwise not be interested in nor should we have knowledge of. Our children are at highest risk for this type of exposure. There are precautions that we, as parents, can take to help protect their safety (including safety when navigating the world of social media).

I found a great website which lists, in detail, how we can keep our children safe. It is https://www.gcflearnfree.org/internetsafetyforkids/. It includes seven different modules to view and a quiz you can take at the end. Limiting their screen time is also important for a child’s overall health. The American Academy of Pediatrics posted great tips on the following website to help guide parents in making decisions as to how much screen time children should have: http://kidshealth.org/en/parents/screentime-bigkids.html?WT.ac=p-ra

Have a great summer!!

Please check the "Lost and Found" for your child's belongings. We will be donating ALL items on June 21st if they are not claimed.
