Message from the Principal, Mrs. Kelly Maloney

Dear CET Families,

We held screenings for our incoming kindergarten students this week. We are so excited that they will be coming to CET in the fall; they seemed pretty excited too! The screening visit allows us to meet each child and assess their readiness skills. Students are asked to skip, hop and cut. They are asked to identify colors and shapes, and to identify letters and objects. During the screening process, the staff members involved are noting student’s stamina, attention, and ability to follow directions. We use the screening data and teacher observations to help with the placement process as well as to ensure that we have programs and interventions appropriate to the needs of our students. There will be a kindergarten parent orientation in June.

Hopefully you had the chance to visit the District-wide Art Show this week. The majority of our classes went to look at the variety of artwork displayed. Equipped with clipboards and pencils, students noted their favorite pieces for each medium-watercolors, pencil drawings, clay, sculpture, and collage.  Ask your child what piece of artwork was their favorite. Do you know which piece of artwork your child selected to display?  Art projects will begin to come home next week.

Our fourth grade students did a fantastic job in their Broadway Kids performance! Selections from the following musicals were highlighted in this performance: All Shook Up, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang , Newsies , School of Rock , The Wizard of Oz , and Xanadu !  Kudos to our music and art teacher for putting together such a wonderful collaborative performance that highlighted our students musical and artistic abilities!

Our last musical show will be the Spring Concert on June 7 at 7:00 pm. The Spring Concert will feature students in strings, band, and chorus. We look forward to seeing our students perform!

Stay cool!

News from the Assistant Principal, Mrs. Kerri Bianchi

A critical part of the test development process is the field testing of questions in schools throughout the state in order to ensure validity and reliability in the New York State Testing Program.  Each year, school districts are asked to participate in field testing.    This year on June 6th, the  3 th grade will take part in a NYS Math Computer Based Field test.  In the near future, all NYS ELA and Math tests will be administered online. Participating in computer based field testing will provide us with the opportunity to test our devices and testing procedures in a low stakes testing environment.  We agreed to participate in the computer based field testing as we want to be completely prepared when New York State makes the shift to online assessements.  The field test will last approximately 40 minutes and students will not be graded on their performance on the field test.  Field tests are administered in order to help the state develop questions for future NYS tests and student participation is important.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Kelly Maloney or Kerri Bianchi

Coping with Change through Resilience

Change is a natural part of life, but it can often lead to many worries and uncertainties about the future. Children face many changes on a daily basis. Most of these are small and do not cause distress. However, changes such as moving onward to a new school or to a new teacher can sometimes be very challenging. It is important to make the child feel that he or she is surrounded by adults of whom he or she can trust to help foster the right decisions in life during the time of transition. Some things to keep in mind during a time of transition for your child include:

  • Focus on your child’s emotional resilience, the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties, and encourage him or her to ask for help during the transition if he or she is feeling uncertain
  • Identify and become familiar with any triggers that may be adding to your child’s distress. If these triggers can be controlled, the transition may be easier for your child
  • Have your child talk with friends who may be transitioning as well or may have already been through a big transition (such as moving to the middle school) to help calm your child’s nerves
  • Identify different adults to your child who may be helpful resources to seek out during the time of transition
  • Encourage your child to focus on the positives of the transition and use the transition as a teaching experience. Your child needs to know that changes are good, helpful parts of life that build upon one’s social/emotional well-being
  • Encourage your child to work through problems on their own. This will empower them and make them feel like they are in control and more secure in their own beliefs and abilities, thus making changes easier on them.

As we watch the days become longer, the flowers bloom, and grass grow this spring, remember that changes are necessary and inevitable parts of life that are very exciting times to begin something fresh and new.

TICKS

We are seeing and hearing more about ticks this Spring season. The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) and local health departments monitor the spread of Lyme disease throughout New York State. Lyme Disease is a bacterial infection caused by the bite of an infected deer tick. Untreated, the disease can cause a number of health problems. Patients treated with antibiotics in the early stage of the infection usually recover rapidly and completely.  Please check your children daily for ticks and/or teach them how to do it.  The following are places ticks like to hide, so be sure to include them in your daily checks: Under the arms, in and around the ears, inside belly button, back of the knees, in and around the hair, between the legs, and around the waist.    A tip sheet with more information about ticks and how to remove them can be found at: http://www.health.ny.gov/publications/2813.pdf

END OF YEAR MEDICATION PICK UP

The end of the school year is quickly approaching!   All unused medications must be picked up by the end of the school year.  Unless your child has current permission to self-carry their medication, the school cannot allow your child to bring the medication home themselves. If you need to make special arrangements to pick up medication, please call, Kaylynn Hayes, RN to make arrangements at 914-271-5184 x3216.  Medications not picked up, will be discarded on June 23, 2017.  This includes the disposal of epi-pens.

Important Information to keep in mind for next school year:

  • New medication forms for both prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medications must be signed every year by a health care provider and parent/guardian.
  • Medication must remain in the properly labeled pharmacy or original OTC container.
  • The parent/guardian is responsible to have the medication delivered directly to the school in a properly labeled original container by an adult.
  • If you child has rescue medications for respiratory conditions, epinephrine auto-injector, or insulin, glucagon, and related diabetes supplies, there must be a provider written permission which includes an attestation that the student has demonstrated the ability to self-administer  and written parent/guardian consent. For other conditions, your child may be able to self-carry and self-administer, but will need written permission from both you and your provider.

We request that you ask your pharmacist to give you a second identically labeled container for any prescription medications your student will take at school. We also request that you bring small containers of any OTC medications that your child will take. This will allow the School Nurse to send these medications on field trips and comply with New York State laws pertaining to medication storage.  Medication forms are available on the school nurse web site (http://cetschoolnurse.weebly.com/) or may be obtained from the school health office. Your healthcare provider may use their own form if desired.
