Message from the Principal, Mrs. Kelly Maloney

Dear CET Families,

It was nice to see a number of our students dress up today as part of our Students Dress Up, Teachers Dress Down Day! They looked so beautiful and handsome!

Congratulations to our first grade students for their stellar performance in Creepy Creatures !  They sounded great and looked great!  Our final grade level performance will be Broadway Kids starring our fourth graders!

If you follow us on Twitter, you may know that members of the Croton Rotary Club visited our second grade classes. This visit supports the second grade social studies unit on Communities.  The Rotarians, as they are called, explained that the Rotary Club is like a “service club”. They provided some examples of the goodwill work that Rotary Clubs do for communities. Each student received a copy of How Do They Help? Rotary Clubs by Katie Marsico. Did you know that the first Rotary Club was established in 1905? If you visit our CET homepage, you can read more about the visit and see some photos.

This year, we have made some changes to our library program. In addition to listening to read alouds, engaging in book talks, and developing research skills, students have been learning about coding and engineering.  Every two months, Mrs. McManus, introduces a new Maker Challenge. This past challenge was an Origami Challenge. Origami is being used more and more as a design reference for engineers and scientists. Not long ago, I saw a bike helmet that was designed to be compacted to make it easier for the cyclist to travel with the helmet when not worn. There are numerous benefits to origami as well including eye-hand coordination, patience, following directions, and sequencing.  If you are looking for ways to stay busy over the Spring Break, try Origami!

Our next PTA Principal’s Coffee is scheduled for April 27. The topic will be our school budget.

I hope that you all enjoy the Spring Break!  We return on Tuesday, April 18.

Warmly,

Kelly

News from the Assistant Principal, Mrs. Kerri Bianchi

Spring has arrived and the nice weather is finally here to stay, our students have been able to benefit from more consistent outdoor recess.  With that usually comes an increase in behavior related incident reports.  Students have more freedom to run and play but often require reminders about how they should interact with their friends appropriately.  Please remind your children that rough play is not permitted on the CET playground and that they should always keep their hands to themselves.  If they do encounter a problem with a peer they should be encouraged to use their words first when solving a conflict and then if necessary, ask an adult for help.  Students should also always be encouraged to include everyone in their games and activities.  These guidelines for appropriate behavior also apply to the bus.  All students are riding the bus during this time of year either to and from school or for field trips.  Again, students should be reminded that kind words and keeping their hands to themselves are always expected.  If a student finds themselves in an uncomfortable position where conflicts are not easily resolved, they should always speak to an adult at school and at home.  Together we work to make CET a safe and happy place for all students!  This is also the perfect time to reinforce and remind students of the four Olweus rules that help to keep CET Bully Free:

  • We will not bully others.
  • We will try to help students who are bullied.
  • We will try to include students who are left out.
  • If we know that someone is being bullied, we will tell an adult at school and at home.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

News From Vilma Torres-Pagan, School Counselor

Happy spring!

“The whole of planet Earth is a sacred site.

All people are the chosen people, and the purpose of our lives is a spiritual one.

May we care for each other and for the Earth, for everything relates to everything else.

Feeling this oneness, may we radiate the light of love and kindness that all may live in unity and peace."

         Radha Sahar

Spending quality time with our children while we care for our home is precious. Caring for our home is caring for ourselves. This care encompasses the character traits of respect and cooperation. With spring upon us and Earth Day on its way, a great way to demonstrate to our children the importance of caring for our home is by engaging in activities with our children which do so!

Consider the following: plant a tree. Plant a vegetable garden and tend to its growth. Go on a nature walk. Clean up litter at a local park. Create nature-based crafts, such as a bird feeder. Practice sorting out your recycling. Make crafts using recycled materials, such as creating a thank-you card using brown paper bags.
