Message from the Principal, Mrs. Kelly Maloney

Dear CET Families,

Kudos to our music teacher, Ms. Peters, and our second grade students for their wonderful performance, Did You Hear That Sound? Using nontraditional instruments such as squeaky toys, brooms, and cowbells as well as traditional instruments such as a flute, tambourine, and drums, students created various sounds including a rainforest rain storm performed by Mrs. Liebert’s class!  Ms. Hamilton’s class did their own rendition of STOMP! Ms. Rupp’s class used the iDrum app on the iPads to play different types of drums!  Ms. Baker’s class played the Boomwhackers, and the Carr’s drummed out a song using buckets. Not only does this performance support what students are learning in music it also connects to their upcoming science unit on sound.

Last week in honor of Veteran’s Day, a number of classes made cards and wrote letters that were delivered to local Veterans by our speech teacher, Nicole Dinis.  Mrs. Sullivan’s third grade class interviewed Mr. Stephen Sullivan, a veteran who served in the US Navy.  Students formulated the questions prior to his visit; the questions led to good discussion about life on a ship, the various jobs in the Navy, and marine life.

The next PTA Principal’s Coffee is scheduled for December 1. The topic will be on technology with a focus on the use of Chromebooks and Google tools used in third and fourth grade.  Stay tuned for more information.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Warmly,

Kelly

News from the Assistant Principal, Mrs. Kerri Bianchi

In anticipation of the colder weather that is sure to head our way soon, I wanted to take this opportunity to review a few guidelines that we follow here at CET in order to have your children outside during the winter months as much as possible yet still maintain their health and safety.  Generally speaking, if the sun is shining and the wind is not too harsh, we will send our students outside if the temperature is above 28 degrees.  We do take into consideration the wind chill factor and the real feel temperature when making decisions regarding outdoor recess.   We encourage students to stay outside for at least 10 minutes on cold days but we do allow them to come in to the Multipurpose Room if they are too cold to last the entire recess time outside.   We also know that the building remains quite warm in some classrooms all winter long and that some children like to wear shorts to school.  With that said we recommend that children who choose to wear shorts in the winter bring a pair of sweatpants to leave in their book bags to put on for outdoor recess.  We also recommend that children dress in layers so that they are comfortable throughout the building.  With the cold temperatures becoming more regular we will make announcements to remind students to zip up their coats and wear their hats and gloves while they are outside.  If your child loses a warm winter item please remind them to check the lost and found regularly.  Thank you in advance for your cooperation in dressing your children appropriately for the weather.

Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving!

A Reflection on Gratitude

Gratitude or the state of being grateful is something that often comes to mind during this time of the year. Many of us take time with our families to think of the things we are thankful for and wish each other well for the approaching new year.  In recent years, research has been conducted to emphasize the importance of practicing gratitude all year long and the positive impact it can have on your family and for your children. Studies indicate that students who are grateful tend to have higher GPAs, experience more positive emotions, and go on to live more fulfilling lives. Giacomo Bono, a professor at California State University, has been a leader in conducting research about gratitude and concludes that “practicing gratitude at a young age promotes later development of self-control and self-regulation, which Bono says are resources for lifelong success.” Vicki Zakrzewski, the education director at the Greater Good Science Center at the University of California, Berkeley, indicates, “Gratitude helps foster positive emotions, and we know from research that positive emotions help students with the learning process [by keeping students’ stress response down].”

Some thoughtful and easy ways to speak about being grateful with your children include:

  • Think intentions, costs, benefits—when receiving a gift have your child reflect on the thought behind the gift, the act of someone going out of their way to give the gift, and the personal value that the gift brings to them.
  • Use a gratitude journal—have your child and/or family regularly write about what they are thankful for in their home, school, and/or work environments.
  • Model it—take time to think about what you are grateful for and reflect on this with your child. The act of modeling this for your child will instill the ability for him or her to start reflecting on his or her own experiences.

During this holiday season, I encourage all of you to practice gratitude in your homes in ways that will continue throughout the year and even perhaps become traditions for your family.

CET PTA

We are excited to announce the date of our Winter Craft Fair which will be held this year on Friday, December 9th from 6-8:30pm. We will be sending out a sign-up genius soon looking for volunteers, but mark your calendars as this is always a fun evening for CET families who get to make holiday crafts for themselves or to give as gifts. We will have food for sale so come hungry, and of course Spiritwear. More details to follow.

We want to give a shout out  to everyone who participated in the Scholastic Bookaneer Book Fair. Thanks to all the volunteers and to everyone who came out to shop.

Our next PTA meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, December 14th at 9:30 am.  Please join us!

Lastly, we wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving! Hope that everyone has a fun, long weekend.
